That means she gets her own TV show on Food Network. Amy lives in La Mesa and I believe her show is going to be called, Gourmet Next Door. She claims her favorite restaurant is Tandor here in San Diego which means I have to try it. It's Indian food which I've never had at a restaurant before. It's always been prepared by a friend so I'm intrigued. Plus every Saturday they have a buffet dinner for $7.99. Stars like Jessica Alba, Dane Cook, the cast of Heroes, Nicholas Cage and many others are going to be there plus people from all over the country flock to San Diego for this event. This is the first time there's been a cap on addmittance which is odd. Leaves me to believe that the rumors about the "Con" leaving San Diego is true in that they can't fit the crowd anymore.

American Idol's first stop at San Diego happens on Saturday. I've heard a few of my friends are going to be auditioning. I've said this many times, since I don't have a chance and don't plan on embarrassing myself on national TV I'm going to steer clear of that area as I'm sure it's not only San Diegans who are going to audition. It's going to be at Qualcomm Stadium

Also for those of us that need our fix of Chargers, Saturday will be the begginning of their training camp. I definitely want to go to at least one just to get pumped up for the season but I think I'll hold off for the later dates as it runs till August 22nd.

Hodad's

I'm finally completely done being sick. So much so that I decided to celebrate by heading to OB beach. OB beach was particularly crowded on the day that I went and of all the days, there was an overcast. That didn't stop me and plenty of other people to enjoy the beach. I went boogie boarding in the frigid water then laid out enjoying the day. After enjoying the waves, hunger inevitably hits hard. So we went to Hodad's which has been argued to be one of the best burger joints in town. They certainly have a lot of accolades to prove their title from San Diego magazine to News reporters eating there to find good eats in San Diego. The hole in the wall has a great vibe to it and you'll be kept busy while waiting for you food by just staring at all the license plates on the wall. But back to the burgers; huge and excellent. Plus the price doesn't hurt your wallet which makes it an even better place to stop after the beach. I'm definitely going back before the summer ends.

The Prado

Sorry I've been gone so long. Just finished being sick!

I recently ate at The Prado Restaurant for the first time the other day. We had reservations on a Friday night and I thought it would be more upscale than it was. The prices are definitely above average but it's not as up tight as I thought it would be. This restaurant is smack dab in the middle of Balboa Park which seems like it would be a great place to take a date. A very intimate setting and the lights are turned down low.

As for the food. They had very nice presentation with the food. I started off with tortilla soup as whenever I see it on the menu I order it because it is my favorite soup. Their version of tortilla soup was OK but it needed to be a little bit more hearty. Seemed like they were trying to make the tortilla soup fancy. Then I had Colorado Lamb. Overall the lamb was great. It tasted good throughout the whole thing. The polenta was very creamy and I loved the peas. I ended the night with a cream cheese flan. Usually flans are very sweet or the ones I've tried but this wasn't as sweet as other so I enjoyed it.

Overall this restaurant is great for it's intimate setting and is a great place to take a date or a loved one.

San Diego County Fair

Today is the last day of the fair. I went on Sunday which was reported as one of the hottest days. Great. I went with a group which I have to say is the way to go. You get to try a lot more food at a cheaper price since everyone can split the costs and have some. The first dish I tried was a BBQ Sundae which was mashed potatoes, bbq pork, bbq sauce in a sundae cup topped off with a cherry tomato. As a side dish I had some fried zucchini which is probably my favorite deep fried vegetable at the fair especially when dipped in ranch dressing. After that I had to take a break from food and walk around. I saw the monster trucks, swimming pigs and really beautiful flowers. There was a blossomed artichoke which looked amazing. A friend of mine got the Krispy Kreme Chicken Sandwich. I was shocked that they actually give you a packet of honey as if it's not sweet enough. He said it as good but I couldn't get myself to eating one. We passed by the rattlesnake stand but no one was willing to share with me as I knew I couldn't finish one whole thing. Instead we decided to go for something a bit sweeter, a Mexican funnel cake which is basically one gigantic churro in the shape of a funnel cake topped off with your choice of whipped cream or strawberries. It is really good and will definitely get it again.

After that we decided to take a break from eating and watch more shows until we felt like we could eat again. We opted for the air conditioned rooms displaying rings and precious stones. We also rode the water slide ride to cool us off. Afterwards we finished our day off with a fair classic, corn.

Overall, the two things I suggest everyone bring to the fair; an antacid and a sealed bottle of water. Antacid for obvious reasons and the sealed bottled of water because water is completely over priced but essential. Till next year!

Wags for Wishes

If you like dogs I suggest going to this event. There will be dogs competing in competitions such as obedience and those obstacle courses. There is also a pet adoption area. It's tons of fun and best of all the proceeds go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. My regular local go to place is Da Kine's. It seems to be a regular favorite with the local policemen and fireman as they will come in waves whenever I eat there. As soon as you enter, you get the Hawaiian vibe with surfboards and pictures on the wall along with Hawaiian music. Plate lunches usually come with rice and macaroni or salad. One of my favorites picks is the Loco Moco which is a beef patty on top of rice smothered in gravy topped off with a fried egg. Another favorite is Kalua Pig which is just like one you would have at a traditional Hawaiian luau. You should also try the musubi which is a big favorite for a lot of people. It's rice and usually Spam wrapped in nori (dried seaweed) and it makes for a delicious snack. If you're still hungry after all that try their Kona Kake's which they get from a bakery in Mission Valley. Great tasting and top it all off with an "Aloha Maid" drink. While you're eating you can stare at all the stickers people put on the wall which range from Hawaiian stickers to local stickers. There's stickers from Kamehameha school and stickers talking about okoles (that's butt in Hawaiian). This place always makes me full and happy.

pinkberry

Not too familiar with San Diegans, Pinkberry, with locations such as Beverly Hills and Hollywood, is a big hit wherever it is located. So much so that it has a cult following with people calling it crackberry. But San Diego will finally get to see what all the hype is about as soon as their first San Diego store in Hillcrest opens on Robinson Street in between 4th and 5th. It seems as if yogurt is becoming really popular now and Pinkberry seems to be leading the pack. Although, it is not technically yogurt due to certain guidelines for yogurt, it is just as good. I passed by today and saw the sign for Pinkberry and hopefully it will be open before summer ends. For more info about it visit their website, although they don't say that they have a San Diego location coming soon. Beware though, if you visit their website their jingle may get stuck in your head...for days.

Viejas

I went to Viejas last night just to kill some time and probably some money. As soon as we get there I hit the blackjack tables to see how good I do. No luck. So with what money I have left, well the money I set aside for gambling expecting to lose it, I go to the slot machines. I have a nice run and double my money and end up making some money. Not getting too greedy, I cash out when I have $20 more than what I came with. What can I say, I'm not a big gambler but it's fun once in a while. After a couple hours of messing around with the machines we grab sodas, which are free, upstairs. You know, casinos will do anything to keep you in there. A bit hungry we hit the Sunrise Diner up. There were four of us and with my winnings I order ourselves one burger. Has anyone been to the Sunrise Diner at Viejas? For $13 you can get their signature 20 ounce burger served with french fries and onion rings. Enough to feed a family! Plus we just came in with our free sodas so we all shared that one burger. Just cut it up.

I haven't been to Viejas in a while but they have this new section that looks like a club or a lounge. We just hung around there and ordered drinks. I like Viejas because it's more than just a casino. There's also the outlet mall and good food. I hear their buffet is great but I'll have to leave that for another day. I wish I took pictures but I forgot my camera.

Tokyo Sushi

Tokyo Sushi is one of my favorite sushi places. The vibe is very different than any other sushi place in San Diego. Even before entering you can hear the music blaring and it's not Japanese calm music, it's rap and hip hop. It feels like a club in there. But not to stray too far from traditional, they still welcome you in traditional Japanese style. My favorite roll at Tokyo Sushi is their asparagus roll. I love how it's crunchy and dipped in wasabi & soy sauce, it's perfect. If you're not too fond of raw fish definitely try the asparagus and the crunchy tempura roll. The sashimi is served in big portions and really fresh tasting if you're a sashimi fan. At the end, they give you a bit of a cinnamon drink in a shot portion that you can down in one gulp. Great tasting and a perfect end to a great meal. If you're still hungry try the green tea ice cream. This place is great and is usually packed full at night so get there early. A lot of college students stop by before heading other places.

6784 El Cajon Blvd
San Diego, CA 92115

Yes! Getting to dip all my foods into different things and eating them. Prior to going to the restaurant I was most excited about getting to have chocolate covered strawberries. So when I went the first thing that shocked me was the price. To get an all inclusive meal which includes a cheese appetizer, salad, main course and dessert you would have to spend a minimum of $25 and that's the vegetarian choice. Being that I'm not vegetarian I went for the next thing on the menu which was The Original inclusive meal which consisted of different styles of meat like teriyaki and also salmon.

So first up was the cheese appetizer which came with bread that I get to dip into cheeses. There was also salad so I was munching on that while waiting for the main course because I was starving. Finally the main course arrives and it turns out you have to cook it. Being that I was starving, I dunked all my meat and seafood into the broth fondue and waited again to eat. Once I decided it was cooked I took it out and commenced eating. In my hungered state, I rushed to put it in my mouth only to find out that the broth has heated it to a really hot temperature. So I waited a bit longer with my burnt tongue and proceeded to eat my fondue meat which was at it's best, OK. I didn't really taste any wonderful flavors and the salmon was the only thing I was enjoying because you can never go wrong with salmon. Disappointed and hot, I may add as the broth was steaming over in the middle of the table, we were all just looking forward to dipping fruits into chocolate. When it came there weren't that many pieces of the fruits and breads. I was disappointed that there wasn't a full bowl of strawberries that we could dip and eat to our heart's delight. To get an extra plate would cost me another $4.25 which I wasn't willing to spend as my bill was inching up on $40 including drink and tax. So that was that.

I hear that a lot of people like these fondue places and that there is another one called, The Melting Pot, which I hear is better. But after my first attempt, I don't know if I'm willing to give it another shot. Maybe I just had a bad experience. I'd give it another shot but not for another $40.

Plus if it's chocolate covered strawberries you want go to a farmer's market and get some strawberries and melt some chocolate of your own at home. It's just as good, if not better.

Mission Trails Regional Park

Over the past year or so, I've gotten bit by the rock climbing bug which is great being that San Diego is a great place to love rock climbing. One of the most popular areas to go rock climbing is in Mission Trails Regional Park. If you didn't know, it is the largest urban park in San Diego. Cowles Mountain is also the highest point in San Diego so it's a jewel for San Diego to have it preserved. Besides having a great bike route and hiking routes there is also the great rock climbing with the huge boulders sitting atop the mountains. The rock climber's loop takes you right up to the boulder's face where you can perfect your rock climbing skill or look back to see that you're 400 plus feet off the ground and can see downtown San Diego on a clear day. It's a real nice view up there. Next time I go up I am defineatly going to bring my camera again and take better pictures. I only had my camera phone last time and the other times I've been up there I was only there to climb. Even if you're not a climber, the walk up is a moderate hike and well worth the view if you're not ready to hike up Cowles Mountain. Here are some pictures from my camera phone, I'll take some more when I get back up there.

Crazy Buffet

OK I just got back from a buffet and boy am I full. I rarely stuff myself but I decided to give another buffet a try. Often times buffets are full of second rate food that is mass produced so it's lost it's umph. Crazy buffet does fit it's name though. This is yet another asian style buffet, not as expensive as Todai but for what you're getting for the price you pay it's worth it. For the first time in my life, I tried frog legs. You know that old saying? Tastes like chicken. It really does taste like chicken to my surprise. I only ate half a leg because the thought of chewing on a frog's leg got to me. Other than that there are a bunch of great asian tastes ready to be eaten. Raw oysters, cooked oysters, cocktail shrimp, jumbo shrimp, steamed crab, fried crab, sushi and so much more. The dessert isn't that great but by that time, only the iron stomachs will still have room for dessert. Dinner for $12.99 on Fridays and Saturdays is a bargain compared to other buffets out there. This is a good buffet in the Miramar area and for that price it's well worth it.

Yogurt World

There seems to be a yogurt revolution happening or maybe I just haven't noticed yogurt too much until now. In comes yogurt world on Convoy Street in Clairmont Mesa. As I passed by on my way to another store I saw the line out the door. Wondering what was going on, we all decided to stop. My friend was ecstatic because she is a yogurt fan and couldn't wait to see what the fuss was about. Yogurt world is that, a world of yogurt. I never knew yogurt was so popular. What is the difference between yogurt and ice cream anyway? Didn't really get a definitive answer but I hear it has less fat. Anyway, I'm confused as to what is happening so an employee of Yogurt World explains the set up. You get a bowl and you basically have your way. There's different flavors of yogurt and you basically put what you want on it. Have it your way. After the yogurt, you decide what toppings you want like coconut shavings, strawberries, blueberries and even some candy and toss that into your bowl also. When you're done creating your masterpiece it is weighed by the ounce and you pay by the ounce. It was a fun experience and being that it is summer and it seems that June Gloom has finally left, I see myself visiting this place again when I'm in the area. One downside to the whole thing is the parking lot is a mess and ridiculous. Definitely a fun alternative to your ordinary ice cream.

Akiane: Child Prodigy

Check this out. A model of what should be happening everywhere. San Diego is the first city in California and maybe the nation to have government funded, energy efficient housing complex. Check out the picture, from Union Tribune, showing the carports' roof covered in solar paneling. This is used to generate the majority of the energy. The air conditioners are non-Freon and has a very small, if any, ecological footprint. I think this is great and am proud that San Diego is the first to do this. Hopefully, many other cities will follow in San Diego's footprint or should I say lack thereof a footprint. Beside being great for the environment think of how much help this will be to the low-income families who don't have to worry about utilities as their carports and the sun are doing the work for them. It is always an experience and a way to get a feel for a city to try a microbrewery. Coronado Brewing Company definetly gives off the Coronado Island feel. It is very small town and cozy. The food is great but you should really be here to try the beer that is given very Coronado and San Diegan names like the Coronado Golden or Pt. Loma Porter. There is ample parking for Coronado. If there's no luck in the front try the back alley parking. Give there beer battered onion rings and garlic fries a try. This is great pub food so you really can't go wrong. All the waiters and bar tender are always there to be helpful and were really kind. The bar tender can suggest a beer that will fit your taste as it can be a bit confusing. If indecisive go for the tasters before getting a full glass. So if you're in the area or want to give San Diego microbreweries a try, Coronado Brewing Company is a good choice.

Top Chef

Watch this season of Top Chef on Bravo to see San Diego's Oceanaire Seafood Room Executive Chef compete to become the top chef. For a limited time, 4 months, the Bodies exhibit will be displaying it's bodies and organs at the UTC mall in La Jolla. These specimens, preserved, are posed in life-like positions along with many other organs which have also been preserved and dissected to give the attendee a rarely seen view of our insides. As if the name doesn't already tell you this place is fun, then wait till you visit it. The lights are turned down low and there's tiki decor everywhere. In the heart of downtown, The CohnRestaurant Group, has yet another restaurant to add to their collection. I recently dined here with a group of friends and it is much more than just a place with food, it's an experience. We started the night off right with a "Killa Kilauea." It comes to you as sort of a spectacle with over the top extra long straws and a fire going off in the middle of the drink. The food is a bit different and may surprise you at first. They take ordinary dishes and shake them up a bit which can go both ways in the taste department. If you're an adventurous eater then go for the more bizarre choices but if you're not stick to what you know. A friend of mine had mashed potatoes with a hint of wasabi in them and was turned off after taking one bite. After our meal of mixed feelings, we went straight to desserts and they brought out what looked like a holder for shot glasses but instead of liquor they were filled with tiny desserts in shot glasses. I decided to have key lime pie and felt as if I didn't get enough but settled to just finish the "Killa Kilauea."

Overall I give this restaurant 3 out of 5 Shamu's. The prices are slightly higher than average but the experience of it all is definitely worth it. At the very least go here and just chill with friends getting their interesting twists on favorite drinks such as a Lilikoi Mojito!

Sarah Silverman

San Diego's Rock Station, and in my opinion home of the best morning show, The Mikey Show, Rock 105.3 is hosting their very first comedy night titled, "That's What She Said". This will be undoubtedly a night full of laughter and San Diego is lucky to get three people, who are headliners on their own, jam packed into one night! All for only $40! This is a deal no matter how you look at it. It is also in a very nice venue, Viejas Concerts at Bayside. Get tickets while they're still some left!

Another event that Rock 105.3 and The Mikey Show is hosting is a P-1 Cruise to Cabo. A P-1 is a very dedicated listener to The Mikey Show which isn't hard to become. P-1's when calling in get straight to the point, don't cuss, and turn their radios down. The Mikey Show has a cult following and if you listen you'll see why. There is a smorgasbord of food with many different tastes. My personal favorite is to throw health to the wind for a day and try all the foods people have decided to cover in batter and throw into a deep fryer. Last year I tried a deep-fried Snickers, deep-fried Oreos, deep-fried Cucumber and a deep-fried Twinkie. There is also the beef brisket which begs for seconds.

After gorging yourself with all the different kinds of foods you can attempt to stomach the many different rides at the fair. That or you can also check out the live shows that go on at the fair. To check out what’s playing on the Grandstand Stage click here. You can catch the likes of Joan Jett, The All-American Rejects, or “Weird Al” Yankovic.

So if you’re in town or have time, make sure to make a trip to go to the San Diego County Fair. It’s a great family and friends experience. Hurry you have till July 4!

Horton Plaza

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; is a 5 level shopping mall located in the heart of downtown that is right next to the Gaslamp Quarter. The mall is known for it's vibrant colors and quirky architecture. The mall includes stores such as Nordstrom's, Macy's, Sharper Image, Hot Licks, Steve & Barry's, Abercrombie & Fitch and Loius Vuitton. Park in the mall's parking structure and get your ticket validated in one of the stores by purchasing something. This will give you 3 hours of free parking. The top floor has all the fast food restaurants including a couple fine dining restaurants. Be aware though, it is highly likely that you will get lost as Horton Plaza seem like a maze as it has mezzanine levels and remember what vegetable or fruit level you parked in or else you'll be in the mall forever.

Comic-Con 2007

For all you comic lovers, San Diego Comic-Con is the biggest one of it's kind. It's the mother of all Comic Conventions and it's hosted right here in America's Finest City. Many things happen at the "Con" as many like to call it. Already slated to come is the hit TV show, Heroes, and Masi Oka better known as Hiro Nakamura will be there. Many other TV shows and celebrities also show up to get buzz around their current projects or give the fans a taste of what's to come. Besides that many top companies such as Capcom, Blizzard and Sony are all there to show what's to come. People from all over the US flock to San Diego to come check this once a year event out. It's a great time to visit San Diego as it's one event that many comic lovers and gamers associate San Diego with. If you haven't already decided to go and want to you better get moving. The majority of hotels in the vicinity of the convention center are probably fully booked for that week. I'd suggest finding a hotel deeper into downtown in hopes of finding a vacancy or find a hotel along the trolley line as that will be your best mode of transportation. The trolley drops you off right in front of convention center. If staying deeper in downtown walk a couple blocks or get those guys on bikes to give you a ride. If you're driving to downtown there a couple of parking structures available including the one under the convention center but you have to be really early to snag one of those spots. One structure that seems to always be available is the San Diego transit parking at 12th & Imperial.

For those of you going to Comic-Con, check back often for my suggestions on goods eats in the downtown area.

Bali Hai

At Shelter Island there is a great restaurant called Bali Hai with an incredible view. One of the many restaurants with a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean. Not only is the view great but the food is even better. For only 13.95, the Volcano Pupu Platter is the best choice for an appetizer. Pele's Nachos and Bali Hai Ribs are great and won't dissapoint. The atmosphere is very lively at night with many different things going on at once. The bar is in the dead center if you just want to eat and drink there but there's also tables that sit next to the window to eat while catching the view of the Pacific Ocean. Occasionally there are weddings going on downstairs.

America's Finest City

With San Diego being the 7th largest city in the United States and 2nd in all of California, it can be a daunting task when deciding exactly what to do in this great city.
